We are kicking off our Restoration of the second to last McKeen Car, the “Cuyamaca.” A unique combination of many early innovations including all steel design, a drop center door, aerodynamic knife edge nose and rear end, as well as Internal Combustion on the Railroad. Please Help us Restore this car to its former Glory!

Our Business Plan for the Restored McKeen Motor Car is to omit the lettering on the car for any specific railroad, and to make a number of pieces replaceable on the car. For Example, if we were to run the car at the California State Railroad Museum, we could place gold leaf magnetic lettering on the car to superimpose as a Southern Pacific McKeen Motor Car, of which ALL were Scrapped. We may also want to add a steam locomotive bell, number boards and an oil headlamp, and remove the McKeen Gas Headlamp to better pull off the appearance.

The car is unique not for the railroad it ran on precisely, but more because of it’s maker and of the many innovative designs wrapped up in one Railcar, so interesting and useful that it became a legitimate product that sold 152 units. It’s shortcomings are why only 2 survive today.
