About Us
2Hello, I am Madison Kirkman, Located in Ramona, San Diego County, California. I’ve put countless thousands of hours into researching Absolutely Everything McKeen.
I have rescued a McKeen Rail Motor Car Built in 1908, the “Cuyamaca” [Kwee-uh-mak-uh] that ran in San Diego from 1908-1914, Yuma from 1914-1926, and in Alaska on the Alaska Railroad from 1926-1945 or so, when it was removed from the rails and used as a shed. Rescued in 2016, and restoration beginning in 2025.
We have also rescued a McKeen Trailer Car, the Last McKeen Railcar from the Southern Pacific, originally #16. It was sold to the Calistoga and Napa Valley and left on a siding unused, so much so it was never lettered for the railroad. It was scrapped and body sold to a local in St. Helena in 1937. It was used as a shed until 2025 when a nonprofit that owned the property graciously allowed us to remove the car as they were developing the property. The Car Body will serve as a work shop for the Restoration of the McKeen Car Cuyamaca, but will also be studied, and Stabilized. If down the road someone wants to restore this trailer car, it will have survived in good hands.
The McKeen Motor Car Company Historical Society is a Certified Non-Profit, and Accepting Donations for the Restoration of the “Cuyamaca.”
